The Dark Road: Our Journey with Shame

Every man has carried it, not as a passing feeling but as something woven into the very fibers of his being. The cold, contracting voice that says he is too much, or not enough. That his anger is dangerous, his tenderness unacceptable, his grief an embarrassment, his longing a weakness. Shame is seeded in a boy before he has words to refuse it, taking root in the dark interior before he even knows something is growing, and it does not stay in the mind. It lives in the chest, the gut, the shoulders, the jaw. It is held in the body long after the moment that installed it has passed.
We have gathered before to find our home, to tend the fire within, to open the heart of manhood. This gathering asks us to go beneath all of that, to turn toward what we have spent a lifetime being told to hide. Not to perform a release. Not to lay it down once and walk away clean. But to do something harder and more honest: to keep returning, to sit with it in the presence of brothers, to ask where the beauty is underneath the wound, and to bring, slowly, some love and compassion to the part of ourselves we have most feared to show.
This is the alchemy. Not the erasure of shame, but the transformation of our relationship to it. Not letting it go, but learning to hold it differently, with clarity, with tenderness, with a heart grown larger than the story shame tried to tell.

Trust. Respect. Responsibility.

Who can come to a COMEGA Weekend?

All those who identify as male are welcome.  We are fathers, sons, grandfathers, lawyers, policemen, firemen, veterans, and carpenters, software engineers, therapists, graphic designers, professional entertainers, health-workers, administrators, teachers and students. We are employed, retired, unemployed, and seeking personal growth, healing, respite, or just to get away for a weekend from the pressures of life. COMEGA is inclusive of all men, regardless of their race, color, ethnicity, national origin, sexual orientation, disability, age, or religion

Who runs the events?

COMEGA is a participant-run gathering. The Organizing Committee (OC) has created a framework for the weekend, not the content. Each participant brings his piece, his truth into the framework to keep that content rich and fresh. We are all creating this weekend together. Whether we are offering a workshop, attending one, or just relaxing during the weekend, we are COMEGA.

What to expect?

Through various workshops and activities, in small and large groups, COMEGA provides an open, trusting, non-competitive environment for men and youth of all ages*, races and backgrounds to openly share and learn from each other. Men are encouraged to bring their sons. This is a wonderful opportunity for young men to watch other men at play and men sharing from their hearts. (*Participants under 18 must have a guardian present.)

Friday Evening

Starts with registration and a wholesome meal (if you prefer vegetarian food, please indicate this on the registration form). Following the evening meal will be a traditional opening circle, where we will begin the process of forming a sense of community. Following the opening circle there is an opportunity to participate in a ceremonial experience and evening workshops.

Saturday (All Day)

Activities include three meals, an opening circle after breakfast, morning and evening workshops and Home Circles and free time to explore the grounds, hike, or relax. After the evening meal we gather in a community circle to reflect on the day’s activities, followed by a talent show, drumming circle, cards, games and free time.

Sunday

Begins with breakfast, an opening circle, more workshop sessions, and Home Circle time. After lunch there will be a community sharing circle followed by a ritual closing the weekend. Departure is slated for 3:00 PM.

Each participant will be responsible for his own cleanup at the end of the day and before the Sunday departure.

On Friday night we create small group circles of approximately eight participants with two experienced members acting as designated facilitators. These small groups meet throughout the weekend to offer grounding; a time to process the topic workshops, activities, and needs, as well as providing direct support and connection to group members.
